Cerritos reports 335 youth played in 2026 basketball league; volunteers contributed 2,814 hours

Recreation Services Supervisor Sergio Alvarez presented highlights from the 2026 Cerritos Youth Basketball League on May 7, reporting 335 youth participants on 39 teams and an awards ceremony held March 16.
Alvarez said the season ran Jan. 10 through March 16 and involved divisions for ages 5 through 13, with games and practices at Cerritos and Whitney high schools and practices also held outdoors at Cerritos Park East and Heritage Park. "This year's league consisted of 90% Cerrito's residents," he said. Staff and volunteers oversaw the season: 53 volunteer coaches contributed approximately 2,814 hours, 15 scorekeepers and 26 referees supported games, and volunteers completed background screenings and training.
Season highlights included a coaches exhibition game, a sportsmanship keychain awarded Feb. 21, a parent–child shooting contest and an awards night with a national anthem performance by Whitney High School student and Cerritos resident Anish Vasishta. The commission voted to receive and file the report by unanimous vote.
Staff recommended the commission receive and file the report; commissioners praised the program and noted its community value. No funding decisions were requested as part of the report.
