Revere All Abilities Day awarded $5,000 grant; organizers race to secure permits and lifeguard coverage

The Revere Commission on Disabilities announced the All Abilities Day at Revere Beach received a $5,000 grant from Save the Harbor/Save the Bay to support the event, which organizers said previously received roughly $3,200–$3,400 last year.

The commission discussed next steps for permitting and safety. The DCR permitting application has an April 24 deadline and, to avoid delaying the application, organizers plan to file with the current site and revise later if a different location is approved. Commissioners emphasized lifeguard coverage as a key constraint: organizers explored requesting lifeguard support from the city, hiring a lifeguard with grant funds, or requesting a temporary lifeguard "loan," and noted DCR repainting and signage work already observed at the beach.

Organizers said they have coordinated with Save the Harbor/Save the Bay for logistics and with Universal Access Group about equipment sharing. They tentatively scheduled the event for Saturday, Aug. 15 (third Saturday in August) to avoid conflicts with other local events and to ensure equipment availability; that date remains subject to DCR permit approval.

Operational details under discussion included vendor approval (the city requires vendors to be on an approved list or complete vendor paperwork), food-service vendor selection, portable power needs and the possibility of purchasing a solar generator to avoid fuel-generator permitting and spill-prevention requirements. Commissioners asked members to recruit advocacy groups to table at the event and to help publicize the day through Revere TV and local papers. A DJ is already booked for the date, officials said.

The commission did not take a formal vote on event approvals during the meeting; staff and volunteers were assigned to continue permit work, contact potential vendors and seek lifeguard solutions before the next meeting.
