Maple Shade Township Council approved its 2025 municipal budget after a public hearing and presentation that laid out revenue shortfalls and spending priorities. The budget totals approximately $21.2 million and sets the local-purpose tax levy at about $13.2 million, an increase from $12.5 million in 2024.
CFO Adrien Mckendry provided the council with a breakdown of revenues and appropriations, telling the council that the proposed municipal portion of the tax rate would increase by 2.9 cents — from 0.938 in 2024 to an estimated 0.967 in 2025 — which the presentation estimated would amount to just under $50 per year for the average assessed home. Mckendry said the increase responds to reduced grant and one-time revenues and the absence of anticipated cannabis-related revenue that had been expected in 2024.
The presentation showed the budget relies on a mix of surplus (reported year-end surplus of about $8.25 million in 2024), state aid and local revenues. Major appropriation categories include public safety (about 29.8% of appropriations), public works, debt service and capital improvements. Mckendry said the 2025 budget is roughly $31,000 larger than the adopted 2024 budget and emphasized efforts to favor sustainable revenue sources over deep service cuts.
No members of the public spoke during the hearing. Following the presentation, the council closed the public comment period and voted to adopt the budget. The roll-call vote on the motion to adopt was recorded as: Mr. Kaufman yes; Miss Nunes yes; Mr. Simons no; Mr. Zadnik yes; Mayor Terrier yes — a 4–1 outcome in favor of adoption.
The council also approved procedural resolutions to read the budget by title only and to authorize local examination prior to the hearing, citing the statutory provisions that permit those actions. Copies of the adopted budget and the slideshow presentation will be posted on the township website and summarized in the township newsletter. The council’s next procedural step is administrative posting and related public-notice requirements.
