Council unanimously adopts ordinance changing police job titles

The Edinburgh Town Council adopted Ordinance 2025-11 on Aug. 4, a first-reading waiver and approval of technical changes that update public-safety job titles in the town salary ordinance.

Mr. Hu introduced the ordinance as a terminology update, saying, "this reflects the updates the 77 fund kicks into. So as you know we no longer have a town marshal, we have a town police chief and so forth with actual officers. So all the salaries and all the titles have been updated for that." The changes replace references to "town marshal," "deputy marshal," and "assistant town marshal" with "police chief," "police officer," and "assistant police chief," respectively, and do not alter pay amounts.

A council member moved to waive the ordinance's first reading; after a second the body approved the waiver by voice vote and then passed Ordinance 2025-11 by voice vote. The minutes record no roll-call vote; the clerk confirmed the motion and passage were handled by unanimous voice votes during the meeting.

The ordinance, listed in the meeting packet as an amendment to Ordinance 2025-1, will return for standard adoption processes per town procedure if additional formalities are required; the council treated the change as non-substantive to compensation and focused its discussion on terminology and timing for payroll. The council then moved to the budget workshop portion of the meeting.

No formal amendments were proposed during the adoption and no public comment addressed the ordinance during the meeting.
