Colts Neck Township Committee enters closed session on potential litigation

The Colts Neck Township Committee on May 5, 2026 convened a special meeting at Town Hall and approved a resolution to enter an executive (closed) session to discuss potential litigation, the committee announced.

A clerk read a Sunshine Law notice saying that "notice requirements of the New Jersey Public Meetings Law have been satisfied by noticing the Asbury Park Press and the Two River Times on April 30th, 2026," and that a copy of the notice is on file with the Township Clerk. Committeewoman Buss, Deputy Mayor Vizzetta and Mayor Viola were recorded present at roll call, and the chair announced a quorum.

The committee opened the public-comment period and reviewed procedures, including a four-minute limit and a requirement that speakers state their name and address for the record; no members of the public took the floor and the public-comment period was closed. The committee then read and adopted Resolution 2026-84, which cites N.J.S.A. 10:4-12(b)(7) as the basis for excluding the public from discussion of potential litigation. The resolution states that the committee "will not be taking action during executive closed session" and that it was "anticipated" the closed session would last approximately 90 minutes.

A member moved to go into executive session and another seconded; the committee approved the move by voice vote. The public portion of the special meeting was adjourned and the committee recessed into closed session. The committee indicated the subject matter would be made public when confidentiality no longer exists.

No formal actions affecting policy or spending were taken in public during the meeting; any further public disclosures will be made after the committee determines the need for confidentiality has ended.
