Committee approves WestEd math‑intervention study for elementary grades with opt‑out safeguards

The North Reading School Committee approved a proposal to participate in a WestEd math‑intervention research study for grades 3–5 at the district’s elementary schools.
Presenters said the study involves teacher professional development and a treatment/control design; students identified for interventions can opt out and no surveys will be collected from students. The research provider (WestEd) will compensate participating teachers. "There is an opt‑out option obviously for any kind of participation," a presenter said.
Committee members asked about timing, cost and scale. Administrators said they did not expect district costs and described the program as an early‑year activity involving about 12–16 students at each elementary school for the intervention sample and four teachers directly participating.
A motion to approve the WestEd math intervention program for the 2024–25 primary school year was made and the committee approved it by roll call, 4–0.
Administrators said the district will provide families with full privacy and opt‑out information before participation begins.
