The Town of Shenango board on Jan. 7 debated compensation and duties for the town’s code enforcement officer after the town learned that an outside municipality would no longer provide after‑hours coverage.
Board members said the code officer has been asked to carry the on‑call phone and handle emergency calls, duties that previously fell to a salaried department head. The officer asked for increased compensation (a proposal discussed included raising annual pay toward $50,000–$55,000 rather than remaining hourly), saying the added responsibilities include MS4/stormwater and floodplain work.
The board discussed alternatives including a salary conversion, overtime arrangements and the scope of floodplain/MS4 duties. One board member observed that some floodplain and MS4 administration tasks are done during regular business hours and would not necessarily add incremental hours, while after‑hours emergency coverage could require overtime or a salary redesign.
Because the matter involved personnel and specific compensation numbers, the board voted to move the topic to executive session for further discussion with legal counsel and department managers. The public comment period earlier in the meeting included a complaint from Dawn Warden about a recent interaction with the code enforcement officer; the board said it would also consider personnel matters in closed session.
