El Paso County commissioners voted unanimously May 26 to accept and appropriate $1 million in federal funds for safety improvements at the Constitution Avenue and Peterson Road intersection.
Nikki Simmons, the county’s chief financial officer, told commissioners the intersection has an alarming crash record: "From 2019 through 2024, there were 69 intersection crashes involving 138 vehicles," resulting in 53 injuries and two pedestrian fatalities. The planned scope includes improved crosswalks, pedestrian signals, refuge areas, signal-timing changes and lighting upgrades, Simmons said.
Congressman Crank, who Simmons and staff credited with securing the congressional funding, urged local officials to be good stewards of the money. "Our constituents expect government working together," he said, adding that his office only champions projects that county experts identify as high priority.
Commissioners praised county staff and the congressman for the successful effort. The board adopted the resolution and budget appropriation by a 4-0 vote and took a brief recess for a photo with the project team.
The county said the money will be added to the Road and Bridge 2026 budget for the Constitution Avenue and Peterson Road Improvements Project; staff will move forward with design and implementation steps outlined in the resolution.
