The ALMA SCHOOL DISTRICT board heard a presentation from career coach Lindsay Johnson, who described programs designed to support students' college-and-career planning for grades 8—. Johnson said the program coordinates career exploration, work-based learning and student success plans; it partners with Arkansas Tech Ozark under a 50/50 grant and organizes events such as Draft Day and the Arkansas College Application Campaign.
"It's a really big deal, I'm really excited about it this year," Johnson said, describing an effort that the district says helped roughly 30 participating students last year, with about six receiving job offers and a signing day held at the Peak Innovation Center.
During the superintendent's annual report, administrators discussed Alma Forward, a multi-phase strategic planning effort built from surveys and a guiding coalition that will produce a draft Portrait of a Graduate for board consideration in November. The superintendent also summarized a recent state meeting about the release of raw Atlas assessment data and the state board's approval of associated cut scores; administrators said raw results will not include rankings and that interim assessments will now be required during the school year.
The report noted the district's full accreditation status and cited a K-12 membership figure shown in the packet (350 K-12 students, pre-K excluded). Administrators also thanked Regions Bank of Fort Smith for an in-kind furniture donation they estimated at about $30,000.
Board members asked about timelines and next steps; the district plans to present a draft Portrait of a Graduate at the November meeting and to continue community engagement via the chamber and targeted surveys.
