Norfolk City Council on July 24, 2025 approved an agreement with Norfolk Public Schools to expand the city's school resource officer (SRO) program from two officers to three, placing one officer at the high school, one at the junior high and one at the middle school.
Chief Tai presented the agreement to the council, describing it as an expansion of a 20-year partnership intended to place certified law-enforcement officers directly in schools to promote safety and mentorship. "With this addition, we'll have one officer each at the high school, the junior high, and at the middle school," Chief Tai said, and the district will share half of each officer's total compensation to support the collaboration.
Council members asked questions and no public opposition was raised. The council voted with all members present in the affirmative and the motion carried.
