Councilman Whitaker, reporting for the economic development committee, said the panel will meet at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 29 in council chambers to consider pending business items, including a $10,000 new‑business grant application from a cosmetology school.
Whitaker described the local challenge of vacant commercial buildings and said the committee is preparing incentive packets to encourage property owners to rehab spaces so retailers and small businesses can move in. He also urged residents to "shop local" to support businesses during redevelopment.
The grant applicant and the committee will review eligibility and next steps at the Jan. 29 meeting; no grant award was decided at the council meeting.
