"If we do not fix this, then we could potentially have no air conditioning inside," said Mr. Adam Cook, who presented the bid. On safety policy, the board approved implementing a clear‑bag requirement for school sporting events in 2026–27. The administration said the first year will be advisory and the following year enforcement will be stricter. Mr. Cooper, who spoke about athletics, said the policy aligns with neighboring jurisdictions' practices and is intended to improve safety and coordination with visiting teams.
The board also approved administrative recommendations to stop paying for substitutes’ in‑service attendance except for coaching staff and contract employees, citing program cost and noncompletion rates. In addition, members approved the transfer of Hurley weight‑room items and bleachers to the county so those items can be disassembled or relocated, and authorized a $5,000 contract with Real Deal Cleaning to clean exterior windows at Riverview Elementary and Middle School (two vendors submitted $5,000 proposals; Real Deal was selected based on insurance and documentation).
A proposal to broadly eliminate virtual education next year was raised and debated during the meeting, with concerns about emergency situations and geographic variability. The motion failed for lack of a sustained second and did not advance to a binding change in policy.
Several routine personnel and financial items were approved, including the minutes and payables, ratified coaching and driver hires, acceptance of a DCJS grant for SSO officers, adoption of a temporary four‑10‑hour work‑week schedule for 12‑month employees in July, and authorization to open a bank account for the new Southern Gap High School.
What happens next: Facilities staff will proceed with the Hurley repair contract and the administration will begin public outreach on the clear‑bag policy before the 2026–27 athletic season.
