Lanett council adopts multiple resolutions, declares gym roof replacement an emergency and recognizes scholarship and mentoring honorees

The City Council of Lanett, Alabama, met Monday, June 2, 2025, and unanimously approved a slate of resolutions, declared a gym roof replacement an emergency, and recognized local scholarship and recreation program honorees.

Mayor Jamie L. Heard presided over the meeting at Lanett Municipal Complex. After an invocation by Chaplain Rodney Jones and the pledge of allegiance, the council approved the meeting agenda and the minutes of its May 19 meeting. A public hearing on weed nuisance matters was conducted by Code Enforcement Officer Johnny Wood; no members of the public spoke.

Councilmember Tamalita Autry recognized the three 2025 Energy Southeast Scholarship recipients, naming Brennan Plank and Immanuel Williams at the meeting and noting that Dominique Thompson had been recognized earlier due to scheduling conflicts.

Lanett Parks and Recreation Director Trent McCants, joined by coaches Robert Cotton, Tae McCants and Danny Williams, described the department's mentorship program for young men and presented Leadership Awards to Aaron Frazier, Michael McCants, Fred Brock and A.Z. Jennings.

On the legislative and administrative agenda the council read and approved several resolutions. Resolution 06-25-01 addressed weed nuisance and abatement actions for named properties including a Crown Castle site and others; Resolution 06-25-02 covered weed abatement actions affecting 38 properties. Both were moved, seconded and carried unanimously.

The council approved Resolution 06-25-03 to declare the Gym Roof Replacement an emergency after Recreation Director Trent McCants said the gymnasium "had 28 leaks" and is used "6 days a week." The council voted to approve the declaration by unanimous vote of the members present; the minutes record that motions "carried unanimously." The minutes do not specify whether the mayor cast a council vote.

Councilmembers also approved Resolution 06-25-04 to use an AuburnBank line of credit for property related to the airport entrance road and Resolution 06-25-06 authorizing a Spectrum Business agreement that permits Spectrum representatives to access Blue Skies Flight School premises; City Attorney Gray explained the authorization simply "allows Spectrum permission to come on the premises." Resolution 06-25-05, another weed-abatement item, was also adopted after Councilmember Tony Malone asked for clarification about the difference between on- and off-premises nuisances.

Councilmember remarks were brief: Malone and Autry congratulated students recognized earlier; Tucker thanked Code Enforcement Officer Johnny Wood for neighborhood outreach on a speed-bump request; and Councilmember Tifton Dobbs raised concerns about potholes on First Street, South 13th Avenue, South 5th and 8th avenues, and paving needs in Crystal Springs.

Mayor Heard recognized Carrie Wood, Executive Director of the Greater Valley Area Chamber of Commerce, who summarized recent Chamber activities including an Adopt-a-Mile cleanup on County Road 289, a Lunch-and-Learn and local ribbon cuttings, and introduced chamber employee Harley Thomaston. The mayor announced a municipal election scheduled for Aug. 26, 2025, and public events for the coming weekend: a city cleanup on June 7 meeting at City Hall at 8:00 a.m., a Neighborhood Watch fun day at W.O. Lance playground on June 7, and a Valley Local food-truck and bingo event downtown on June 8. He also thanked participants in a recent Juneteenth walk.

Mayor Heard called for adjournment; Councilmember Tony Malone moved and Councilmember Angelia Finley Thomas seconded. The motion "carried unanimously" and the meeting adjourned at 6:50 P.M.
