Columbia Heights board approves preliminary ESSA grant allocations and accepts personnel report with one abstention

The board heard a presentation from Director Tuckerrell and Teaching and Learning Coordinator Miss Gardner, who said the FY27 ESSA allocations remain unchanged from the figures shared at the April 28 board meeting and that final allocations typically arrive in October or November. A motion to accept the preliminary ESSA grant as presented was moved and seconded and passed on an oral vote.
Board members also approved the consent agenda, which included minutes and policy first readings, and later voted to accept the personnel report. Board member Jessica disclosed an abstention because her spouse is listed on the personnel report; after voting the motion carried. A motion earlier in the meeting to accept several policy first readings was withdrawn by the mover, and the board voted to approve the withdrawal of that motion to resolve the procedural confusion.
In keeping with the district’s meeting procedures, Chair Granland then moved that the board meet in closed session under Minnesota Statute 13D.03 to discuss labor negotiations; the motion carried and the meeting paused streaming for that confidential discussion. The board returned after the closed session and adjourned at 6:53 p.m.
What the board approved: the preliminary FY27 ESSA grant allocations (final amounts subject to the usual fall adjustments), acceptance of the personnel report (with one abstention recorded), and routine consent items. The withdrawn motion pertained to accepting first readings of several policies; the withdrawal was approved procedurally.
