Board adopts SWAT technology safety training and updates field‑trip policy

Mr. Stewart presented revisions to the student and staff acceptable‑use policies to implement the SWAT (Safety While Accessing Technology) education program developed by the West Virginia Board of Education. Under the update, students in grades 3–12 will receive age‑appropriate SWAT instruction annually; parents or guardians may review materials and opt students out, in which case an alternative safety lesson will be provided.
The packet also included edits to Mountaineer Challenge Academy language clarifying graduation‑counting rules under state policy and a reorganized policy on field, co‑curricular and extracurricular trips that clarifies approval steps, supervision requirements, transportation limits and the requirement that county‑sponsored trips not charge students for transportation.
Board members recommended the updates for adoption and approved them by voice vote.
