Two participants in a May 28 planning meeting for Marblehead Public Schools agreed to send a newsletter to local papers this week that explains the upcoming override ballot, lists voting dates and office hours, and highlights recent school achievements.
The Chair and a staff member said the newsletter will include a concise recap of why the override is needed, a breakdown of the three ballot questions and how the tabulation works (noting that if multiple questions pass the highest tier, the highest single tier prevails). The staff member said, "If we send this to her tomorrow, we can get it in next week's printing," and the participants agreed to provide both a print and an email/web version.
The participants discussed an "insurance policy" framing to guide voters without endorsing a position, and decided to review an explainer video for any language that could be construed as an endorsement before embedding it; the staff member offered to re-record the clip if necessary. They also agreed to list election day and early voting dates for clarity.
The newsletter will include brief links to the District Improvement Plan (DIP) and individual school improvement plans when those links are available. Staff said they will check with John about whether the DIP is posted online and will add direct links to each school's plan if possible.
The draft will spotlight recent wins, including a Nelm's item and an absenteeism improvement noted as "massive wins" in prior meetings. The staff member added a performance stat (about 16 percent of districts, 55 of 351, showing comparable improvement) to underline progress while noting the figure's approximate nature.
Calendar items will be included as well: graduation timing and congratulations for seniors who presented senior projects (the presentations were noted for the following day at 12:30). The participants also agreed to include footer links to meeting recordings and other resources and to embed the newsletter in an email for a Monday distribution; Julia will handle sending the email version.
Next steps: staff will audit the explainer video for endorsements, provide the final links and copy to Lee by the end of the day to meet the Friday print deadline, and Julia will distribute the email version on Monday.
