The Foxborough Select Board approved a request from the Recreation Department to close streets around the common for the town’s Light Uptown celebration on Nov. 29.
Mark Craig, director of human services, told the board Light Uptown is an all-day series of activities culminating in a tree lighting at 6 p.m., with craft fairs, decorating events at the library and evening activities on the common. He said the recreation team proposed closing additional streets—including School Street and portions of Central and South streets—to create a safer loop for pedestrians and to make parking more manageable.
The board approved a motion to close the roads from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. so the tree lighting and evening activities can take place without through traffic; staff said roads would reopen after 7:00 p.m. The record notes food trucks and other vendors will be on site and that the event has been expanding in recent years.
Craig framed the closures as a response to past safety concerns, saying families and children have in the past crossed active roadways to reach event activities. The board approved the closure by voice vote with no recorded opposition.
