The Prospect Heights Fire & Police Commission on Monday approved several sets of past meeting minutes and authorized conditional offers of employment to fill upcoming academy slots, the commission said.
The action came during routine business after roll call. The commission voted to approve minutes from meetings in April, May and early June. No public speakers addressed the commission during the meeting.
Chief Kro told commissioners the department plans to supplement materials from the National Testing Network with a departmental cover sheet and a quick‑reference front page so staff and applicants can more easily see prior job history and essential checks. "The beauty of this company is it's $500 a year," Chief Kro said, describing the vendor cost and the department's intent to keep testing on a regular cadence. He said the network produced more applicants than expected and that annual or repeated testing should improve candidate flow.
In a separate departmental update, a speaker described a recent life‑saving response at a community event, urging bystanders not to hesitate to perform chest compressions during a choking emergency. "You cannot be afraid to put pressure ... a broken rib can heal; you can't bring somebody back to life," the speaker said as a public‑service reminder.
The commission then debated and approved a motion to give the department authority to extend conditional offers of employment to any of the five remaining candidates on the oral interview list who complete and pass the required background checks, psychological evaluation, medical exam and drug screening. The conditional offers are intended to secure candidates before the department's August training academy (noted in the meeting as August 17). A motion to authorize the conditional offers was made, seconded and adopted by roll call; the minutes record the motion carried with those present voting in favor and one commissioner absent with notice.
The meeting closed with a brief announcement about the upcoming Rock and Runway community event — opening at 4 p.m. with food trucks, live music and fireworks expected later in the evening — and the next regular commission meeting set for Wednesday, July 31 at 4 p.m.
