The Barstow City Council agreed to open applications for two Planning Commission seats and to advertise the openings from Oct. 9 through Nov. 6, with interviews to be held during the second and third weeks of November. The motion to advertise and to schedule interviews passed unanimously.
City Clerk Services Manager Mill Hernanz explained that recent ordinance changes require the city to publish openings and allow both incumbents and new applicants to apply; the council also directed staff to publish the vacancy in the newspaper and on social media.
Council appointed Mayor Pro Tem Noble and Councilwoman Hernandez to serve on a temporary ad hoc committee to conduct interviews; Councilmember Rodney Bran Jr, a current Planning Commissioner, urged residents who meet qualifications to apply and described the role as an important, unpaid public service.
The council noted that if the application pool is small the city may extend the window. The ad hoc committee will bring recommendations back to the full council following interviews.
