District math team spotlights alignment push and piloted adoption as board hears PD results

Teacher leaders and district staff told the board the elementary Math Improvement Team (MIT), part of a Preschool‑to‑3rd‑Grade Cohesion Collaborative (P3CC), completed year two of a three‑year initiative to align instruction to the California Math Framework.
Robin Fletcher, district coordinator, said the team has emphasized 'open tasks' — classroom activities that foreground number sense and student reasoning — and convened cross‑site professional development that drew elementary teachers districtwide. Fletcher said the MIT will lead the implementation of the K–5 curriculum selected through a pilot process this spring.
Classroom teachers who presented at the district PD described hands‑on rotations and open‑task demonstrations. Second‑grade teacher Maria Cruz said colleagues reported immediate adoption of open tasks in classrooms and cited better engagement among quieter students and English learners: “We’re seeing students who rarely participate become confident,” she said.
Trustees praised the PD and asked staff to return next year with implementation data and early measures linked to assessments. District leaders said pilots of two vendor programs are underway and that teacher leaders from the MIT will guide curriculum rollout and PLT (professional learning team) integration.
No formal adoption vote of a specific commercial curriculum was recorded at this meeting; the board approved a related K–2 reading screener later in the agenda.
