Weddington Proclaims Oct. 24 World Polio Day, Rotary Leaders Urge Continued Vaccination Support

The Weddington Town Council presented proclamation P225-05 on Oct. 13, naming Oct. 24, 2025 as World Polio Day and recognizing Rotary International’s role in global eradication efforts.
Craig Horn, president of the Rotary Club of Weddington-Waxaw, thanked the council for the proclamation and recalled the era of iron lungs, urging continued effort: “We’re this close,” he said, describing Rotary’s longstanding work to immunize children worldwide. Tom, another Rotary volunteer who travels in support of the program, explained that polio remains endemic in Afghanistan and Pakistan and stressed that very high vaccination coverage is necessary to stop transmission: “So unless we get 95% or more of the children vaccinated it will continue to transmit at some level.”
The council accepted the proclamation and Rotary representatives requested permission to post the proclamation on their website; Mayor Jim Bell presented the document on behalf of the council.
What’s next: The proclamation is ceremonial but reflects the town’s support for vaccination-awareness efforts and Rotary’s local fundraising and outreach.
