The Weddington Town Council on Oct. 13 directed staff to begin researching upgrades to the town website to meet impending ADA requirements and to gather proposals that include examples of accessibility tools and optional AI-driven navigation features.
Council member Karen opened the discussion by noting the town must be ADA-compliant by April 2027. “By April or by April 2027, the town website has to be ADA compliant,” she said, and asked staff to solicit quotes and compile a list of state ADA requirements for the council.
Discussion emphasized that AI features could improve how residents find forms and information but cautioned that AI does not automatically satisfy ADA obligations and raises security questions. One council member noted a computer-science professor warned of privacy and bot-driven query costs, and staff said options exist to separate sensitive records on secure servers.
Council members agreed there is value in exploring AI examples while making ADA compliance the primary requirement; the motion was to research options, obtain quotes and return with cost and security analyses. No capital spending decision was made at the meeting.
