The Grandville City Council adopted a new personnel policy that permits limited exercise-equipment access for city employees, locating the equipment in the fire station basement and authorizing an initial equipment purchase.
City Manager Griffin framed the policy as an employee-retention and wellness measure that had been developed with department heads, the city's insurance carrier and legal counsel to reduce liability exposure. He said the policy establishes permitted hours (6 a.m. to 10 p.m. for non-public-safety staff with department-head discretion for public-safety personnel), requires a signed liability waiver and limits use as a privilege that can be rescinded if problems arise. "This is a privilege. This isn't a right," Griffin said.
Council approved the personnel policy and a related purchase order for equipment from RP Fitness/Dick Sport in the amount of $4,647; Griffin noted the vendor offered a 20% discount for police and fire personnel, which would reduce the final cost. Council members asked about locker/shower facilities, access controls and waiver language; staff confirmed men's and women's locker rooms exist at the fire station and that key-card access and a liability waiver will be used to control access.
The council approved the policy and purchase by roll call. Staff said they will implement the access-control procedures, collect waivers and monitor the program; council retained the option to rescind the benefit if it becomes problematic.
Next steps: Purchasing will complete the equipment order with the noted vendor discount; Human Resources and department heads will finalize waiver forms and key-card access rules before opening the facility to city employees.
