Student advisory council unveils website to help eighth-graders discover clubs and sports

Members of the superintendent's student advisory council presented a project on May 26 designed to help eighth-graders and incoming freshmen find extracurricular activities and connect with club sponsors.
Brandon, who identified himself as a four-year member of the superintendent's advisory committee, said the project grew from student surveys and outreach to club sponsors. "This website was created to help students be able to jump start into their high school career," he said, explaining the site shows club descriptions, who to contact, meeting times and short videos or pictures so younger students can preview opportunities.
Other student presenters described their reasons for participating. Blake Underhill said the site helps students "get involved early and it gets your name known in the community." Josa Lopez said Joy Club gives students many volunteer opportunities, and Ashley noted that club ties to larger organizations let students continue volunteering after high school.
Staff said the committee surveyed ninth-, tenth- and other student cohorts for input, collected sponsor contact information, and will continue to update the site annually. The board and attendees praised the project and discussed a proposed outreach trip to the middle school so eighth-graders can view the site in person before enrolling in high school activities.
The project will be maintained and expanded by successive advisory council members, and staff said they plan outreach to middle schools in the coming academic year.
