Superintendent Brian Latwis to resign June 30; board appoints interim assistant superintendent

The motion to accept Dr. LatwisAresignation passed on a roll-call vote. During public comment, Barnaget High School vice principal Mr. Dubac thanked Dr. Latwis, saying, "I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you to Dr. Latwis. He has done so much for our schools." The board president, Mr. Sarno, and other members echoed appreciation for Dr. Latwis's years of service.
At the same meeting the board approved a proposed employment contract for Katherine Vanassel to serve as school business administrator and board secretary from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027, "subject to review and approval of the executive county superintendent," as required by NJAC 6A:23A-3.1. The board voted to authorize submission of the contract to the county office for review.
Later the board voted to appoint Kevin Carroll as interim assistant superintendent at a daily rate of $700, effective May 27, pending county superintendent approval and a successful background check. The roll call for Carroll's appointment recorded one dissenting vote (Mr. Fedorzic) and carried with the remaining members voting in favor.
What this means: the board has accepted the superintendent's planned departure and immediately moved to secure continuity in district leadership by advancing a business administrator contract for county review and naming an interim assistant superintendent. County approval is required for the business administrator contract and for the interim appointment to be finalized.
The board did not provide additional public comment on Dr. Latwis's next steps beyond expressing thanks. The personnel motions and appointments concluded before the board adjourned.
