The South Dennis Historic District Commission approved a Town of Dennis plan to replace an existing fence, add a map box and place two stone benches at the former Old Town Hall parcel at 485 Main Street, subject to a single design condition.
Deputy DPW Superintendent Tom O'Connor described the proposal: remove and replace the lead-painted concrete fence with a two-rail split-rail fence (matching materials used in other recent town installations), install a map box at the corner of the ancient cemetery, and place two natural-stone benches with stone-dust walkways leading to the existing flagpole. O'Connor said the materials and product match fences recently installed at Jericho Center and Baker House.
Commissioners reviewed historic photos and discussed fence styles, lead-painted concrete posts and townwide consistency. After discussion about the flagpole setting and pedestrian use, a commissioner moved to accept the application with the condition that the flagpole stone-dust area be installed as a circular space within the same general measurements; the board voted in favor.
The commission advised cedar-weathered split-rail or an appropriately colored, low-visual-impact fence and requested that final layout preserve sightlines to the ancient cemetery. The Town will proceed with design adjustments per the condition and coordinate with staff on final details.
