School committee approves expanded 'behavior support staff' job description to formalize in‑school supports

The East Bridgewater School Committee approved an updated job description on May 5 that formally renames and expands the role previously known as "behavior specialist" to "behavior support staff."
Mrs. McPartland, who presented the change, said the new title and description reflect a shift to a more proactive, districtwide set of duties: visible monitoring (cafeteria, recess, passing time), running student groups, providing in-the-moment supports and collaborating with families and staff. "We wanted to have a more inclusive title of behavior support staff," Mrs. McPartland said, explaining that the new description was drafted with building administrators and reviewed with current staff.
The new description clarifies reporting (building-based administrators with escalation to central office as needed), workday expectations (seven-hour day inclusive of lunch and transition periods), three required professional days before school starts and that these positions remain at-will and outside a bargaining unit. Committee members asked about professional development and whether the change affects job grading or compensation; Mrs. McPartland said PD remains and there is no immediate change to compensation or bargaining status.
The committee voted to accept the revised job description and will include the updated language when issuing contracts for the next school year. The item was recorded as an action and approved by voice vote.
