Board recognizes substitutes of the year and student civics finalist

At the start of its May meeting, the Anderson County Board of Education recognized four substitutes of the year and presented certificates and gift cards in acknowledgment of their service. The district presenter named Katrina Bass (preschool), Sherry Hamner (elementary), Josh Ooten (middle school), and Mona Templin (high school) and thanked Southeast Equipment Sales for its annual donation supporting the awards.
The board also recognized Anderson County High School junior Gavin Degenhardt, who was selected as one of four students to represent Tennessee in the Department of Education's 1776 presidential civics contest commemorating the nation's 250th anniversary. A district representative described Gavin's path to the regional finals—a three-part online exam followed by oral exams in Atlanta—and said his selection reflects dedication and critical thinking. Gavin told the board he enjoyed questions about the "critical era" in early American history and said he is considering legal studies in college.
Chair praised both the substitutes and student representatives and encouraged community members to attend upcoming graduation and awards events.
