The Falmouth Select Board on Sept. 9 affirmed the appointment of Jim Guus as the town's director of veteran services and agreed to waive the Charter's division-head residency requirement to allow him to begin work on Sept. 23.
Town staff presented Guus as the finalist from a competitive search; the manager said Guus rose from a pool of many applicants and noted his 26 years of U.S. Army service, five years as a veterans employment counselor for the Massachusetts Department of Career Services, and social-work credentials. The board made and seconded a motion to affirm the appointment and to waive the residency rule, and the vote carried.
Jim Guus told the board he was "humbled by the faith that your selection committee has placed upon me" and pledged to perform his duties with "the utmost professionalism" and empathy for local veterans. He will be scheduled to start Sept. 23, according to the manager's briefing.
The waiver of the residency requirement was framed as a short-term personnel accommodation to allow the town to hire a candidate with specialized experience who currently lives in Plymouth. Board members and staff said they expect Guus to bring outreach, case management and veterans'service benefits experience to town work and to coordinate with the Veterans Council committee.
The affirmation followed the standard appointment motion and vote; the board did not record a roll-call tally in the public audio but announced the motion carried. The board will oversee Guus's onboarding and any reports to the Select Board as needed.
The immediate procedural next step is the new director's start date; the office will report on initial outreach and service strategies at a future board meeting.
