Holmdel residents raise safety and notice concerns over Haslet Route 35 drive‑through construction

Several Holmdel residents told the township committee on Tuesday that a commercial drive‑through development under construction on Route 35 in neighboring Haslet Township is creating safety and notice problems for people who use local streets.
"We're a small cul‑de‑sac. Our egress and ingress is from Miller Avenue," resident Vincent Del Castro (speaker 6) told the committee, asking whether Holmdel had been notified and whether traffic studies and additional traffic devices were being considered. "We got over 50 residents that are gonna navigate through this now, and we weren't even considered."
Administration and staff said Haslet’s planning board approved the site plan and the state was involved because the site fronts a state highway. Administrator Chris (speaker 3) said any project fronting Route 35 requires state approvals and that Holmdel would not be the approving authority for the Haslet plan; he said he would reach out to Haslet officials and retrieve paperwork, including any traffic study, and report back.
The township noted that state law requires notice to properties within 200 feet of a project’s property line and that Holmdel’s notification obligations are limited when the development lies in another municipality, but officials said they would contact Haslet and New Jersey Department of Transportation as needed. "I'll reach out also tomorrow and start working on getting all I'll I'll just get the paperwork from them," the administrator said.
Residents asked the committee to press for traffic devices, information about delivery trucks, and whether the site would operate 24/7; administrators said they would seek concessions where possible and gather available approvals for review.
The committee did not take formal action Tuesday but pledged follow‑up to gather Haslet’s approvals and any traffic studies so Holmdel can evaluate potential safety or infrastructure impacts.
