Lynbrook board approves park grants, crosswalk contract and schedules public hearing for 831 Sunrise Highway

The Lynbrook Village Board on Feb. 17 approved a series of routine permits and vendor contracts, authorized grant applications for park upgrades and infrastructure, and scheduled a public hearing for a proposed medical office at 831 Sunrise Highway.

The meeting opened with the pledge of allegiance led by Mr. Healey. Board members then unanimously approved the Jan. 12 minutes and moved through consent items including a parade permit for the Lynbrook train station, a temporary sign request for a local youth team, and a request allowing five fire department members to attend FDIC in Indianapolis (April 18–25, 2026).

Why it matters: The approvals clear the way for near-term community events and capital work that the board and staff say will improve safety and local commerce. Several items also rely on outside funding: the board authorized New York State grant applications for playground and safety-surface replacement at Grace Park and Lawson Park, and a Community Development Block Grant application to Nassau County for a soccer-field parking lot and Broadway storefront improvements.

Chamber of Commerce update: The Chamber representative (identified in the meeting as Michelle Mela) told the board the chamber honored four community members at its Evening of Excellence and promoted upcoming events including Experience Lynbrook (March 7) and a breakfast on AI (March 25). "We recently had our annual Evening of Excellence. It was a great turnout," the chamber representative said.

Contracts and repairs: The board approved a Lantech contract to install stamped crosswalks, with a contract amount cited in the packet as 108,883. Trustees discussed placement at Langden and Broadway and noted Broadway’s narrower roadway may affect costs for that crossing. Separately, the board approved an approximately $35,000 change order after contractors found contaminated soil while doing drainage work at the soccer field; the change order covers remediation and completing new lines to support multiuse sport layouts.

Public safety and grants: Trustees accepted a Stop DWI contract covering 2026–2030 that will provide $15,000 per year through county distribution. The board also approved travel for five firefighters to attend FDIC training in Indianapolis and authorized purchasing maintenance for the department’s breathing-air compressor, selecting the lower bid provided in the meeting materials.

Land-use item and public hearing: The board set a public hearing for the special-use application at 831 Sunrise Highway, where an applicant is proposing a medical office with underground parking. The applicant’s counsel asked to move the project forward; after some discussion the board agreed to schedule the public hearing for March 30 to allow required public notices to be completed.

Demolition authorization: The board voted to authorize demolition of a vacant commercial diner on Sunrise Highway after hearing that property owners and leaseholders are seeking to expedite closure of outstanding lease obligations; officials said there is an ongoing legal situation and authorized staff to proceed with demolition arrangements.

Community remarks and emergency response: During 'good and welfare' Trustee Emory and other officials publicly thanked DPW, police, fire and volunteer crews for their response to a recent heavy snowstorm. Emory said the village’s departments and volunteers "did a tremendous job" clearing streets and helping residents. The board also praised a police-led effort to locate and stabilize a juvenile who fell about 70 feet while 'urban exploring' on the Manhattan side of the 59th Street (59th Street) Bridge; Lynbrook police helped identify the location so NYPD and FDNY could find the youth and transport him to a hospital where he was stable when last reported.
