The proclamation — read aloud by Cotton — cited labor-force and business statistics, saying working women constitute tens of millions of the nation’s workforce and noting that women-owned businesses account for about 40% of U.S. businesses, generate approximately $1.8 trillion in sales and employ about 9 million people. Cotton said he urged “all citizens in Madisonville, all civic and fraternal groups … to join this salute to working women.”
Representatives of the Hopkins County Business and Professional Women’s Club were invited forward to accept the proclamation. A club representative said, “On behalf of the Hopkins County BPW, I would just like to thank the mayor and all of you recognizing this,” and the council applauded.
The proclamation text encourages local civic, educational and community organizations and media to support events recognizing professional women and their contributions to the local economy and civic life. No formal action or vote was recorded; the proclamation was read and presented as ceremonial business.
The council proceeded to other proclamations and routine business following the presentation.
