Township members report widespread road damage after recent paving, ask county for answers

Committee members spent substantial time at the meeting describing damage and traffic-surface problems left after a recent repaving contract, reporting that a tack-like material placed between milling and new asphalt has hardened and adhered to intersections and streets across town.

Several members said they had sent photos and emails documenting the damage to county project staff and the contractor and asked what remedial steps the county would require. The committee recounted instances in several neighborhoods where streets were left bumpy or covered in a hard residue described in the discussion as a product called “TAC” placed between the milled surface and new asphalt.

Township staff said they had raised the issue with county engineers and that county crews had been asked to respond on an emergency basis. Committee members also discussed potential short-term remedies, such as mechanical brushing or specialized drum machines that remove surface buildup, and noted that full removal might require seasonal action by snowplows or additional contractor cleanup.

Members emphasized they expect the county to enforce contract obligations and to advise whether the contractor will be required to return and repair affected areas.
