At Monday’s meeting, Kaylee (Kay) Maxfield presented a formal plan to establish Siler City’s first Youth Advisory Council, saying the group would "serve as a bridge between our adults and the youth in our community." The council would have 42 representatives drawn from area middle and high schools and college‑age members and plans to complete three service projects required for state registration.
Maxfield outlined a timeline: form the council by mid/late September, hold an executive‑board meeting by Sept. 30, recruit members by Oct. 15 and hold the first full meeting by Nov. 1. The group also plans service projects and conference attendance to meet North Carolina Youth Advisory Board registration requirements.
Commissioners reacted positively. Mayor Donald Matthews and other commissioners praised the presentation and asked staff — including the town clerk and town manager — to review the proposed rules and confirm compliance with town and state requirements. Town manager Jack Meadows and staff offered to set a time for Maxfield to meet with planning or clerical staff so the item could be placed on the next meeting agenda for motion and vote.
Maxfield said she is prepared to serve as the council’s chair for the first year so the group can meet the one‑year establishment requirement before applying for formal state recognition. The board did not take a formal vote at Monday’s meeting but directed staff to prepare a motion for the next meeting.
