John Buckley, Plymouth County register of deeds, said foreclosure activity rose in April, reporting 18 foreclosure deeds compared with six in March and 46 foreclosure notices compared with 26 in March. "If it's you, uh, it's a calamity," Buckley said, urging homeowners in difficulty to seek help.
Buckley described Plymouth County as a hard-hit area during the 2008 foreclosure crisis and said the COVID-era moratorium meant lenders "have not caught up." He recommended homeowners reach out to federal housing counselors such as Neighbor Works for help modifying loan terms.
He also promoted a free fraud-alert service on the registry website (plydeeds.org) that emails a user when a document matching their name is recorded. Buckley warned against private companies that charge high fees for copies of deeds and urged residents to keep a copy of their deed in their estate package.
Buckley listed town-level counts on the April notice list and said there were 12 orders of notice for Brockton and six for Weham. He framed the registry's alert and outreach as steps to help homeowners spot problems quickly and avoid loss of title.
