Waxhaw swears in three new commissioners; Susanna Wedra named mayor pro tem

Three newly elected members of the Waxhaw Board of Commissioners took the oath of office at the board's Dec. 9 meeting, and the board moved quickly to appoint leadership and delegates to regional organizations.

Daniel Ferris, Mike Dulio and John Jim McGyani were sworn in by board members early in the meeting. After the oaths, the board adopted the meeting agenda and the consent agenda by voice votes. The board then nominated and appointed Susanna Wedra as mayor pro tem; Wedra took the oath for that office during the meeting.

Commissioner Daniel Ferris said he was "honored to join this board" and that he looks forward to working with the mayor and town staff to "support long-term stability" and ensure decisions are guided by town codes and ordinances. Commissioner Don said the new board will "bring a new tone" and serve "above all with humility."

The board also approved a slate of delegate appointments by motion and voice vote. Mike Dulio was named primary delegate and Daniel Ferris alternate for the Central Carolina Regional Council; Richard Daunt was confirmed to continue as the alternate to the Charlotte regional planning body (referred to in the meeting as CARPO); Richard Daunt and John Deminyani were appointed primary and alternate delegates to the Western Union Municipal Alliance (WUMA); and the board named delegates to the Downtown Waxhaw Association and the Friends of Waxhaw Parks and Trails as presented during the meeting.

No formal roll-call vote tallies were read into the record for these routine procedural motions; each was announced as carried after the voice vote. Town Manager Scott Datson and other staff were thanked by commissioners during remarks following the appointments.

The board concluded with brief comments from commissioners thanking voters and staff and previewed next year’s schedule of meetings and live, in-person work sessions. The meeting adjourned by voice vote.
