Beatrice mayor: street projects and housing builds are moving despite rain delays

Mayor Bob Morgan provided a progress update on several Beatrice infrastructure and housing projects, saying wet weather has delayed some crews but most projects are moving forward.
Morgan told KWBE that 19th Street remains under construction and work on Sixth Street — where crews are boring a pipe under the river rather than using the bridge — has been slowed by groundwater filling deep excavations. He said Lincoln Street is open and that grading at Crow Crossing and work at Heritage Heights have been affected by recent rains.
On pavement work, Morgan said milling overlays are largely finished and the city will shift into crack‑seal and other fall maintenance. “We should be done with all of that and I think we’re pretty well done with all the milling overlays,” he said, crediting a staffer, Jason, for finding and trialing new surface techniques the city used this season.
Asked about Fifth Street, Morgan said the project is advancing with staged concrete pours so that parking and traffic are not entirely eliminated; striping and curing schedules will determine when additional lanes open.
Morgan also discussed housing redevelopments downtown, saying construction at the Kensington and Stoddard sites is clearly visible. He noted Stoddard is being converted into 55+ apartments with exterior entries and credited Hoppy Construction for moving that project ahead.
No new traffic closures or additional funding requests were announced on the program; the mayor emphasized teams are trying to limit parking disruption and complete work in stages.
