The Town of Hurley board approved a resolution to declare a deteriorated structure unsafe and to prepare an RFP for demolition and removal.
Paul, the town’s code official, told the board that the building’s state of disrepair makes demolition the only practical option and that unknown hazardous containers (including gas tanks) were present inside and around the structure. “Given the state of disrepair the only option is demolition as soon as possible,” Paul said, and he offered to help prepare the RFP scope for contractors.
Under the resolution, staff will solicit bids for demolition, and costs will be assessed against the property owner as allowed by town procedures. The board approved preparing the RFP and moving forward with corrective action to address the unsafe condition.
Paul said crews had observed empty and possibly filled tanks; the town will require a contractor to remove tanks, pump any remaining contents and dispose of hazardous materials according to law. The board asked staff to ensure the RFP clearly describes hazardous‑materials handling and to return with bids for contractor selection.
