Pickens County honors students, cites gains in district assessment results

Dozens of students, teachers and coaches were recognized May 18 by the Pickens County School District board for academic honors, arts achievements and athletic successes, including state qualifiers and All-State performers.
The recognition program covered College Board Honorees, UGA Certificate of Merit students, GHSA and regional awards in literary and performing arts, All-State theatre and chorus, and a long list of athletic accomplishments. Highlights included state/regional placements in wrestling, swimming and cross country; an appearance by the Pickens High varsity baseball team in the state championship in Columbus; and a first-ever Sweet Sixteen run for the Pickens High girls soccer program.
Chief Academic Officer Dr. Amy May presented preliminary milestone data showing increases in higher performance levels (threes and fours). She cited a 7% increase in sixth-grade math, a 5% increase in fifth-grade math, an 18% increase in eighth-grade science at Pickens Junior High School, and a 9% year-over-year gain in high school biology (19% over two years). Dr. May emphasized reductions in the lowest-performing students as well — for example, an 11% decrease in level-one scores in eighth-grade math at one school.
Superintendent Dr. Thomas and other board members praised staff and leaders for the gains and the evening’s recognitions. The board noted upcoming events including graduation on May 23 and the Pickens High baseball state championship game in Columbus.
