Pickens County board approves 2026–27 handbook, multiple vendor contracts

The Pickens County School District board voted May 18 to approve the 2026–27 parent-student handbook and a package of vendor contracts, and heard district academic and financial updates.
Board members approved the parent-student handbook and code of conduct as presented; the change will allow the district to digitize required forms in Infinite Campus so parents can review and sign online before the school year. The motion to approve the handbook passed after a motion and second.
CFO Amy Smith reported the district’s April financials before the votes, saying the district is on track and carries no debt: “We have no debt.” Smith reported general fund revenue collected for April at 82.81% and expenditures at 70.24%, and a SPLOST month-end balance of $10,031,976.63. She also noted capital outlay East Boss revenue for April of $806,534.27 and that special revenue funds are on a reimbursement schedule.
The board approved procurement and service contracts for the 2026–27 fiscal year: Carroll Daniel Construction as construction manager for the Harmony Elementary renovation (RFP 2026-01); Lanier Exterminating for exterminating and pest control services; Waste Pro for garbage services; and Hall Brothers for landscaping and lawn maintenance. Each item was moved, seconded and approved during the meeting.
The consent agenda, which included financial reports, governance team operating norms, out-of-state overnight trips and minutes of recent board meetings, was approved in a single vote.
The board also heard an operations update on planned summer facility projects, including a high school remodel finishing by Aug. 1, a full remodel at Hillside and a junior-high addition to house sixth-graders. Assistant Superintendent Chris Barber said projects are on schedule and that the district will report back with results.
The meeting concluded with board comments praising staff and school leaders and an adjournment.
The approved contracts and handbook will be implemented as described in board action; future meetings will include follow-up reports on construction work and routine financial monitoring.
