"Lawrence teachers, you are number one. We are proud to support your union," Mali told the committee during a three‑minute public comment slot.
A second resident, Luis Roblas (183 Abbott Street), asked detailed public questions about professional development, parent training and recent line‑item changes in the budget. Staff answered on the record: they described a concentrated professional development effort (including a QELL program the superintendent said was about $2.5 million), family resource center interpreters and a reclassification of some central office budget lines into program owners to improve transparency.
Community members and committee members also raised concerns about public notice and access to budget materials. Committee members asked the administration to supply a fiscal year‑to‑date spending column and more school‑by‑school detail in the volume two budget materials; the CFO said that material will be provided in the follow‑up budget volume.
The public comment period was brief and the hearing then recessed into a detailed CFO presentation on FY27 revenues, expenses and the district’s financial risks. The district emphasized it will present the final appropriation to the City Council on June 8.
