Council amends town-code residency language for town manager

Valdese Town Council voted to amend the town code governing residency qualifications for the town manager. The motion struck language that read, in effect, that after appointment and establishing residency the council may waive residency requirements and replaced it with language allowing the council, at its discretion, to waive residency requirements without the struck phrase.
Councilmember Harvey moved the amendment and discussion followed about the town's desire for a manager who lives in or near Valdese. Harvey emphasized that while the ordinance language was being changed, the council still "hope[s] that the town manager will live in the town" or within an agreeable commuting distance.
Council approved the amendment by voice/hand vote with no recorded opposition. Staff noted the council had reviewed many applicants during the manager search and that residency expectations remain a factor in recruitment and future candidate considerations.
The ordinance change clarifies the town's code language; personnel recruitment and hiring policy decisions remain subject to council direction and future hiring processes.
