The Village of Mariemont Council approved a resolution declaring the necessity of levying a tax in excess of the 10-mill limitation for permanent improvements, a five-year renewal that will appear on the ballot after county certification.
Kelly, speaking to the council, described the procedural steps: "So this is the first step in the process" and said the county auditor will certify the levy amount. Council members discussed the difference between a renewal and a replacement levy; Kelly and others explained a renewal keeps the existing rate in place and is the usual approach to avoid the risk of a failed replacement ballot measure.
Councilmembers voted during a third reading and approved the resolution by voice vote; the meeting record shows aye votes from Mrs. Brown-Knight, Dr. Lewis, Mrs. Stock, Mr. Beanstock and Mrs. Wells. No change in current tax rates was promised by the renewal itself; any future replacement levy would be a separate ballot measure.
Council members said they plan further internal discussion about longer-term revenue needs, with the finance committee to examine options and report back. The resolution will be submitted to the county auditor for certification before the measure is finalized for the ballot.
