The Santa Fe ISD Board of Trustees on Wednesday approved revisions to the district's District of Innovation plan that add a provision allowing the district to revoke a student's transfer during the school year in cases of excessive discipline, absenteeism or poor academic performance.
Miss Harris, who presented the item, said the changes follow a year-long policy audit and that principals and the district's DEIC committee had reviewed the proposed language. "Yes, we're going to work with kids and parents," she said, "but in the event that there is excessive discipline, attendance or poor grades then we would be able to revoke the child's enrollment in the middle of the year." The board moved and approved the revisions after brief discussion.
District officials said many previously listed innovations were removed because state law or board policy now provides the authority, and the revisions are intended to clarify and tighten the district's open-enrollment framework. Miss Harris said the plan had accumulated provisions since its 2017 adoption that the district no longer needs or cannot lawfully retain.
Board members thanked Harris and administration for the work to "clean" the plan and highlighted that the attendance-related change was a priority for principals. No public comment was recorded on the item at Wednesday's meeting.
The vote formalizes the updated innovation plan; the board did not specify an effective date in the discussion. Administrators said further implementation details and communications to parents will follow the board's action.
