Centerville council approves rezoning that redesignates Deer Haven area as Residential One

The Centerville City Council on Monday approved a zoning-map correction that redesignates an area including the Deer Haven subdivision as Residential One.

Mr. Mike, who introduced the measure, told council members the maps previously showed manufacturing uses in parts of the area — including parcels stretching from the old dump back to Dry Hollow Road and west of Birmingham Road — and that the discrepancy likely dated to the 1970s or early 1980s. After two public hearings and a unanimous recommendation from the zoning board, he said the council should correct the map.

The change covers properties inside city limits north of Dry Hollow Road and west of Birmingham Road, with limited exceptions for existing or former businesses at the Dry Hollow–Birmingham corner, including the former Freeman’s garage and the old saw shop at that intersection. Mr. Mike said the council published a map with the resolution and that residents who attended the hearing were “unanimously in favor of this proposal.”

Council members asked for clarification about the scope and existing businesses; staff and the zoning board representative confirmed the recommendation and that the process followed public-notice requirements. The council made a motion to approve the rezoning and proceeded with the vote; the chair called the result and moved on to the next item.

The action updates the city’s official zoning map; staff said the resolution and the map would be placed on the city’s record. No additional ordinance or second-reading timetable was discussed during the meeting.

The council moved to further business after approving the change.
