Haslett board hears literacy coaching update, records resignations and moves to closed session

Wirk said coaches spend the majority of their time in classrooms doing job‑embedded coaching—modeling instruction, supporting small‑group implementation, analyzing student data and running coaching cycles with teachers. She described district activities this year including district‑wide learning walks, coaching‑led professional development called “literacy lunches,” and an eight‑day cognitive coaching training for coaches.
Superintendent Mr. Mally (transcript spelling) also announced personnel changes: Carl Sandvik (fifth‑grade teacher at Murphy) and Paul Piazec (high school ELA teacher) each submitted resignations effective June 5, 2026, and Valerie Butikofer (fourth‑grade teacher at Ralya) submitted a resignation effective June 30, 2026. The superintendent said the district posted a new quick‑reference on district finances on its transparency page and encouraged community members to consult it.
The board took public comment from resident Jeff Kastner, who read excerpts from a university course text and urged attention to teacher preparation for foundational reading instruction. The board acknowledged the comment but did not engage in a back‑and‑forth during public comment, following stated rules that the period is not a Q&A.
On routine business the board approved the consent agenda, which included minutes from the April 13, 2026 regular and closed sessions, by voice vote. Later the board approved a motion to enter closed session to consider union negotiations and to consider purchase or lease of real property; a roll call vote recorded affirmative votes from those present (Secretary Clark; Paul Brown‑Wilson; Trustee Fritz; Trustee Stallworth; Vice President Wisinski) and the motion passed.
