New state SCIP grant will fund trainings and community partnerships in Bayfield County
Summary
County staff described a Wisconsin DOJ State Crisis Intervention Program (SCIP) grant effective April 1 with no county match; planned trainings were delayed by funding timing and the county will pursue partner-led Crisis Intervention Partner trainings this summer.
Barb Flynn briefed the Criminal Justice Council on a new Wisconsin Department of Justice Suicide & Mental Health Community Prevention (State Crisis Intervention Program, SCIP) grant that became effective April 1 and requires no county match. Flynn said delays in receiving the funds postponed trainings that had been planned for March and early April and that she is seeking additional training opportunities this summer, including bringing outside speakers to Bayfield County.
Flynn said the county will not provide Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) for law enforcement this year; instead, in collaboration with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the county will host Crisis Intervention Partner training for law enforcement and other local agencies and encouraged attendees to enroll staff. She also described a grant-funded partnership involving the Washburn Public Library, Washburn Public Schools and a local licensed professional counselor, Brittany Kuka, LPC.
Council members asked that training opportunities be shared with the incoming Clerk of Court during her transition. Flynn emphasized outreach to law enforcement and community partners to increase participation in summer offerings.
