At the May 26 Medina City Council meeting, Economic Development Director Kimberly Marshall reported the city was awarded a $242,360 Ohio Department of Development Brownfield remediation assessment grant to complete phase‑one environmental assessments and related surveying for the South Elmwood parking lot.
Marshall said the grant will fund phase one and related geotechnical and trenching work necessary to determine whether redevelopment can proceed. "We were awarded $242,360 for that grant to complete phase one, phase 2 environmental assessments ... and some other geophysical surveying," she said.
Marshall also reported the city is winding down assessment work at the former Yosenco site. She said the city has received "no further action" paperwork for the site and that the contractor will return to reposition barriers before final invoicing and property transfer to the city for redevelopment.
Marshall noted two recent ribbon cuttings for new businesses — Rios Guitar Company and Music Store and CC Hair Salon — and said a June 26 ribbon‑cutting day is scheduled for additional openings and a Main Street Medina project to convert a supply warehouse into a park facing Broadway.
Council did not vote on the brownfield grant during the meeting; Marshall relayed the award as an informational report tied to upcoming implementation steps and reimbursement processing.
