Members of the Medina City Council's special legislation committee outlined work on a long-term deer management plan at the May 26 meeting and said they expect to bring draft legislation to committee and then to council.
Mrs. Dalvo reported the committee is working with a variety of sources to develop a long-term management approach. Mr. Lamb, a committee member, described the objective as reducing the local deer population to a "sustainable maintenance level" appropriate for the city's geography. He said the plan aims to reduce deer‑vehicle collisions and property damage while improving biodiversity in parkland and forests.
"Our objective ... is a long-term management plan that would bring the deer population in the city down to what's considered to be a sustainable maintenance level," Lamb said, adding the work is complex and will be implemented over several years.
Committee members indicated the plan will include multiple details and that legislation is near completion; they said the measures will proceed through committee before coming to the full council. No ordinance or formal vote on the deer plan was recorded at the May 26 meeting.
Next steps identified during the discussion include finalizing the draft legislation, committee review, and subsequent presentation to council for potential adoption. Council members and staff did not specify a schedule for the committee's next review or for public engagement around the draft plan.
