North Reading explores modular options as Hood school building project advances with MSBA guidance

District administrators gave an update on the J. Turner Hood school building project on April 13 and said they are evaluating modular-unit options while continuing MSBA feasibility work. Administration reported a recent call with the Massachusetts School Building Authority and a site walkthrough with modular vendors to obtain refined cost estimates.
"MSBA did say we could ask for less with feasibility, but we also said we wouldn't want to do that and then have to go back," an administrator said. MSBA staff also indicated that seeking information now would not prejudice future projects should the district adjust plans.
Officials said modular quotes — including options to add four units at one campus or six units across sites — should arrive within weeks. Administrators cautioned that modular solutions require significant site work (foundations, utilities, bathrooms) and that tradeoffs include speed and lower upfront cost versus longer-term capital planning and reimbursement levels. The district plans to report an informational update at Town Meeting and to continue collecting data before asking for funding, if needed.
